Think Outside The Box

2020 has been a year of mixed emotions; many lives were lost, people lost their jobs, some organizations shut down, savings were eroded, and most world economies experienced a recession. On the contrary, many people took their health more seriously, their personal hygiene improved, new jobs were created, some sectors experienced a boom, people’s creativity became unleashed which led to new ideas and better ways of living.

The pandemic brought out divergent analogies in different people. Some see it as a good thing, others see it as the curse of the century. Whatever your interpretations, everyone has been affected one way or the other. Our lives and our profession have also been disrupted.

Historically, humanity has always been enthusiastic of a New Year. We set new goals and make resolutions. 2021, should not be different. It should be filled with so much optimism. However, with the second wave of the pandemic still ravaging the populace many people are already shifting their mindset from optimism to reality and gradually descending into pessimism on how the year will turn out.

In project management, there is the concept of agility. Agility is the ability to move quickly and easily in response to change or challenge. Agility is the project manager’s ability to quickly change the project plan to respond to customer or stakeholder needs, market or technology demands to achieve better project and product performance in an innovative and dynamic project environment.
What we need right now is the ability to apply agility to whatever situation we find ourselves in. We need to respond in a positive way to the current global economic crisis. We need to innovate and revolutionize the way we think, behave, and act. We need to think outside the box.

At the PMI Nigeria chapter, the goals for 2021 are to collaborate, innovate, engage, and increase the advocacy for project management because everyone is a project manager in one way or form. With this mindset, I urge the project management community to think with agility and help achieve the PMI Nigeria chapter goals.

Let us bring our diversity in skill, knowledge, and professionalism to the table so that we can collaborate, engage, innovate, and make the project management profession accessible to all. There’s value in sharing knowledge after all.
